Time really did fly when things were happening. Eva had been busy ever since the mugging at knife point. While it wasn’t on the things that truly mattered—the map, the pin, or who Mr. Anderson might have been meeting with at Coffee Cabana—it was all things that had to be done.

She’d heard back quickly from Jerome regarding Sarah Fiske. Surprisingly, she was, in fact, who she claimed to be. She’d been in trouble with the law a few times, but as she’d stated, she had done her part to make up for that—in some cases community service and in one case, a short jail stay. Regardless, now she seemed to be on the straight and narrow.

There had been no real record of her in the legal system for three years, and up until six months ago, she’d been employed as a waitress in New Jersey. Records showed that her mother, Megan Fiske, had passed away a year prior and that Sarah’s father was not registered on her birth certificate.

Of course, while Sarah was indeed who she said she was, that didn’t mean she wasn’t trying to play Eva. Eva hated thinking that way, and normally she wouldn’t have even gone there mentally, but the odd way in which the young woman had shown up set off some warning bells in Eva’s mind. Not to mention their strange, almost coincidental, history with the same man.

Still, she’d remained a woman of her word. She was now helping Sarah find an apartment in town and Eva had hired her on as a part-time maid to help at the bed-and-breakfast. While Elena had initially been worried about losing income, Eva had assured her that her hours would not change with the new hire.

It had only been a few days that Sarah had worked at the bed-and-breakfast, and already she was invaluable. It was something Eva hadn’t seen coming, but Sarah got along with everyone, including staff and guests. She was kind, friendly, helpful, and she looked professional in her uniform.

When Eva had asked, she’d admitted that before her one stint in jail, she’d worked at a golf resort where she’d learned how to treat guests the right way and how to serve. Eva continued to tell her how thankful she was for her help, but she didn’t stop keeping an eye on the girl. It wasn’t paranoia so much as it was concern for her and Eva’s own business.

Now, however, Eva came back from a quick shopping trip to find Sarah as pale as a sheet.

“What’s wrong?” she asked as the young woman came straight to her.

“Well, I was manning the front desk as you’d asked, and this guy came in. He looked…creepy.” Eva nodded for her to continue. “He asked to see the belongings of a guy named Mr. Anderson. I told him I didn’t know anything about this guest—I checked the logs like you said—and then he started yelling at me to let him see the Gray Room.”

Sarah stared at Eva wide-eyed and continued.
